Frequently Asked Questions

nMarkov isn't reading messages in my server!

The most common cause is that nMarkov doesn't have the right permissions to read the channel you've set it to. Verify that your permissions are correct, both on your server, and for the specific channel.

nMarkov isn't sending messages in my server!

As with the above, make sure that nMarkov has permissions to send messages in that channel.

Additionally, you should make sure that nMarkov has logged some messages in your server, and you can do this with /meta stats. If no messages have been logged, then nMarkov either can't read the channel, or you haven't set one using /config channels set.

There is no set minimum number of messages needed before nMarkov will begin generating messages - it just depends on the quality of your server's log.

nMarkov keeps repeating the same messages.

It does that from time to time. It all depends on the quality of your log, and number of messages in your log. It will stop eventually; just ignore it, and improve the quality of your log by sending more meaningful messages.

How do I improve the quality of messages that nMarkov sends?

When it's added to your server, I highly recommend leaving it alone. The first thing people do after adding it and setting a channel is to spam the same message at it, or send one/two word messages in hopes to get it to learn and work faster. Neither of these will help you, and more often than not it will actually make nMarkov take longer to work.

nMarkov works best with longer, unique messages. I don't mean an entire essays worth of messages - about the length of the previous sentence is good.

Once it's added to your server and a channel has been set, just chat like you normally do. You'll know when it starts working!

If you have a larger and somewhat more chaotic server, then you may benefit from the increased log size that nMarkov Plus can offer. An increased message log means that nMarkov has more messages to work with, which can often result in improved quality of generated messages.

Is nMarkov open-source/will nMarkov ever be open-source?

No.

Can I host my own version of nMarkov?

Technically no, but we're happy to work out a deal where you pay us and we'll host an instance of it for you.

How does the bot... work? How does it generate messages?

Genuinely, I don't know how to answer that one. But, as the name of the bot gives away, something called 'markov chains' are involved. Something about trying to figure out what the next word should be based on what usually appears after it in other messages. But again, no idea.

Does the bot work in languages other than English?

Yes, with varying levels of success.

If your server speaks a Latin-based language (English, German, Spanish, French, etc) - nMarkov will most likely work for your server. I have seen nMarkov work on servers that speak Arabic, but I'm not sure how well it works.

Whenever I try to run a command, I get a message about being banned from using nMarkov.

There could be any number of reasons for why you or your server is banned from using nMarkov. The most common reason would be that you or your server were caught abusing the bot in some way. As you might expect, it's not possible to comment on individual cases on why a person or server got banned for using nMarkov on an FAQ page.

If you think we made a mistake, or want to appeal the ban, you may join our support server.
If you're unable to join the support server, you may be banned there, too - in which case, we can't help you. Sorry.

nMarkov Plus

How does nMarkov Plus work?

Easy! On our Patreon page, pick whichever tier you wish to pledge to. Each tier will give you a specific number of credits.

When you pledge, you'll automatically be given your credits, and can allocate these to whatever servers you wish (as long as you're in the server). One credit can be applied to one server. This process is usually instant, but can sometimes take up to 15 minutes before your credits are given.

These credits can be allocated and unallocated at will, and they aren't locked to a server when used. They don't expire either - they'll exist for as long as you're subscribed.

It's important to note that for your credits to be given, you should link your Patreon and Discord accounts. It's highly recommended to do this before you pledge, but if you forgot, no worries - just connect the accounts and nMarkov should see it eventually.
